An essential home maintenance checklist
Regular checks help you spot leaks, wear, electrical trouble, and ventilation problems before they become urgent.
Every month
- Check under sinks and around appliances for moisture.
- Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms where installed.
- Clean frequently used ventilation and air-conditioner filters.
- Look for loose outlets, damaged cords, or unusual heat and smells.
Every three to six months
- Inspect taps, exposed pipes, and water-heater connections.
- Clean drains and check that water flows away normally.
- Examine doors, windows, sealant, and exterior cracks.
- Check roof drainage before periods of heavy rain.
Once a year
Arrange qualified inspection for systems you cannot assess safely, especially electrical distribution, gas appliances, water heating, and structural concerns. Keep a dated record of inspections and repairs.
When to stop and call a professional
Do not dismantle electrical panels, disturb suspected hazardous materials, work at height without proper equipment, or attempt gas repairs. Turn off the relevant supply only when you know how to do so safely, leave the area if needed, and contact a qualified technician or emergency service.
Create a useful service request
State what you observed, where it is, when it occurs, and whether it is getting worse. A focused request helps the right technician respond and makes bids easier to compare.
